Fishing in Orleans County just keeps getting better and better.
On the Erie Canal great catches of Rock bass and Smallmouth bass are being reported all along the canal, but please remember that Smallmouth bass season doesn’t open until the third Saturday in June so its catch and immediately release. Some good size Perch are still being taken at the Point on Oak Orchard River and also on Johnson Creek at the Kuckville Bridge.
On Glenwood Lake Bullhead and Catfish catches are good to very good. Both Large and Smallmouth bass catches are being seen on Lake Alice and also on the lower reaches of Oak Orchard River from the dam to the point.
On Lake Ontario off the Orleans County shoreline catches of Chinook and Coho salmon, Rainbow/Steel head trout, Brown trout and Lake trout are being taken in very good numbers both by boat and casting from the piers.
Fishing seems to be in the area of 24 to 140 feet of water and from 20 to 75 feet down.
Small to medium size spoons in silver, blue or green color patterns and stick baits in orange, green or blacks patterns seem to be the hot lures.
Please don’t forget that the Condor big 3 fish derby takes place on Friday June 8th and then the Orleans County Pro-Am Tournament is June 9 and 10 this year.

Fishing in all of the waters of Orleans County has really come alive over this past week. On the Erie Canal at the wide waters catches of both Large and Small mouth Bass, Carp, Catfish and Northern Pike are being reported. All along the canal good catches of Rock bass are being taken. Glenwood Lake fishermen are seeing good catches of Rock bass, Crappie and Catfish.
On Lake Alice both Crappie and Bluegill numbers are on the increase. Both on Johnson Creek and at the point on Oak Orchard River good catches of Perch are again being taken.

On Lake Ontario, with the lake starting to warm, fishing is beginning to spread out somewhat. There are still some Brown trout still being taken in the shallower waters.
The rest of the fish species have started their move to slightly deeper water. The hot area seems to be anywhere from 90 to 150 feet of water and the best action is spoons off downriggers.
Although the action on the Chinook salmon have slowed slightly, there are still good numbers of all of the species being taken.
With the LOC Spring Derby in full swing there are several fish that have been caught from the waters off Orleans County on the leader board. Come join the fishing fun that is abundant in the waters of Orleans County. Let’s make everyday a great fishing day, Right here in Orleans County.

The cold and rainy weather of the past week has tended to slow things down on the tributaries within Orleans County.
Now that the Erie Canal is completely filled in our area, good catches of Rock Bass are starting to be reported.
Fair catches of Bullhead are being taken on both the lower part of Johnson Creek and also on Lake Alice.
At Point Breeze Perch are still being taken right at the Point along with an occasional Steelhead/Rainbow trout.
Thank you to all of the volunteers that participated in the Oak Orchard River clean-up and tree planting yesterday.
Also thank you for all the helped with the loading of Chinook salmon into the pens this past week.
Just a reminder that these fish need to be fed multiple times each day.
Please stop by Lake Breeze Marina and sign up for feeding times.
On Lake Ontario along the Coast of Orleans County, fishing has been nothing short of excellent.
The best fishing has occurred in the 50 to 80 feet of water range for a great mixed bag of Chinook salmon, Coho salmon, Lake trout and an occasional Steelhead/Rainbow trout.
Most of the action has been on the downriggers, lead lines and dipsy divers.
Colors range from black and silver spoons to white flashers with either blue or green flies behind them and spoons with a green pattern to them.
With the weather improving throughout the week, fishing should just keep getting better.
Finally a reminder that both Northern Pike and Walleye seasons open this coming Saturday, May 5, 2012.

I thought April was the month for gentle rains that brought May flowers, not snow and gale force winds.
This year will be one that from a weather standpoint will be talked about for years.
I suppose the good news is that when this wind finally dies down, there will be one heck of a mud line on Lake Ontario.
Just before the weather turned nasty, the fishing on Lake Ontario off Orleans County was very good with a mixture of Brown trout, Coho salmon, Lake Trout and Chinook salmon being taken all along the shoreline.
The tributaries within the county were reporting good catches of all the warm water species.
The Erie Canal is filled and these waters should come to life for the fishery very soon.
What will the conditions be when our weather returns to normal, whatever that is, is anyone’s guess.
There is really no sense in talking about lure patterns and techniques because that will all have changed again after this storm.

Several shellfish harvesting areas in Nassau and Suffolk Counties have been designated as temporarily closed to shellfishing, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced. These temporary emergency closures are in response to the extraordinary volume of storm water runoff caused by the prolonged and heavy rainfall that affected much of Long Island from midday Sunday, April 22 into early Monday, April 23.

A big blow on Monday set the stage for stained water, which is still along the southern shoreline. Stickbaits are the main presentation and if you are into colors, go with black and silver.

Spoons are also working and the browns are anywhere from 8 to 14 pounds. Water temps are 43 to 48 degrees depending on your location. Try fishing the mouths of the bays and Maxwell Creek.

Make sure you sign-up for Warren’s Spring Brown Trout Derby. The bait and tackle shop is always open, and this derby had 60 entrants as of Monday. More anglers mean more pay-out money, so sign-up before you hit the browns.

Streams- A little action in the streams, however most are lake fishing.

Port Bay has crappies and blue gills at the southern end of the bay. Perch are scattered and hitting small teardrop jigs.

If the lake is rough you can troll Sodus and Port Bay for browns.

It’s probably one of the better spots for panfish in the county. There is easy access and there is never a problem of too much wind.

Last Sunday, bass boats were fishing near the Port Gibson Bridge. More than likely they were targeting crappies.

All the repairs appear to be completed on the section of the Erie Canal in our area and the refilling process has begun.
On Glenwood Lake Crappie are still being taken but in reduced numbers.
On Lake Alice both Crappie and Bluegills are being caught at both of the bridges.
Perch are still being taken both at the Point on the Oak and in Johnson Creek.
On Lake Ontario Brown trout are still being taken in good numbers when stained water conditions exist.
Black and Silver stick baits off the planner boards and Candy Corn spoons off the riggers are still very good setups.
When the near shore waters clear some are still doing well on the browns by lengthening out their leads to get the lures out of the area around the boat.
The second area of Lake Ontario that has become active is the 80 to 100 foot of water area.
Riggers 30 to 50 feet down and dipsy divers 120 to 140 feet back are catching both Chinook salmon and Lake trout.
Some of the patterns mentioned are Golden spooks and Gold Mag. 42 Second spoons then white & green flashers with blue flies.
Let’s make everyday a great fishing day, right here in Orleans County.

Perch are being taken in good numbers on the Oak at the point.
Bluegill and crappie seem to have slowed down on Lake Alice due to the colder temperatures.
Catches of Crappie on Glenwood Lake still seem to be fairly good although slowing somewhat.
On Lake Ontario catches of Brown trout, Steelhead/Rainbow trout are very good along with good catches of Chinook salmon and some Lake trout are being reported.
Fish are being taken from Green Harbor all the way to Troutburg with the best results coming from the edge of the mud line.
Small spoons with Candy corn patterns 5’ down and 50’ back are doing well along with black and silver stick baits off the planner boards.
Launch ramp docks are in on both the East and West side of Oak Orchard River and a good number of Charter boats are in and ready to serve you.
Let’s make everyday a great fishing day, right here in Orleans County.
